The Early Awareness and Outreach Committee Holds "The Journey to College Begins in Middle School" Event

By Jill D’Amico

ASA

On Friday, June 8th, the Early Awareness and Outreach Committee held its annual "Journey to College Begins in Middle School" program for college and middle school administrators. The event was held at Assumption College in Worcester and 23 individuals from higher education institutions or middle schools were in attendance.

The program began with an introduction of the committee by Co-Chair Jean Berg and background information presented by committee members Alex Bickford and Bill Densberger. A panel discussion followed during which Doreen Delmonaco (Stonehill College, College is Possible), Kristi Pierce (TERI Local College Access), and Denise Ward (Elms College, Step Forward/Step Ahead and Quest) presented information about the programs in which they currently participate. After the presentation, the attendees were able to get advice from the panelists as to how to start an early college awareness program.

Attendees were then divided into small groups and charged with creating a one-day early college awareness program with a budget of $300. Committee members moderated the session and acted as scribes for each group. The committee will review the plans drawn up during this session and award up to two $300 scholarships to the groups with the best ideas so they can implement what was proposed.

After lunch, Dr. Adrian K. Haugabrook, Vice President of TERI Local College Access presented the keynote speech. His presentation included a historical look at college attendance by different constituencies which reaffirmed the need for early college planning and an update on what TERI Local College Access is doing today and plans to do in the future to combat the pervasive barriers to higher education found low income and immigrant communities.
