Become Involved in College Goal Sunday 2008 (aka FAFSA Day 2008)!

Massachusetts College Goal Sunday is growing! The committee met after MASFAA and we are so pleased with the continued interest in this program statewide. This year 22 sites across the state will host College Goal Sunday on January 27, 2008.

College Goal Sunday is a non-profit program that provides free information and assistance to Massachusetts families applying for financial assistance for higher education. College Goal Sunday mobilizes financial aid professionals from Massachusetts colleges and universities to help families of college-bound students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the federally required form for students seeking financial aid, including grants and loans, throughout the nation.

Last year we had 220 volunteers and 1600 people attended College Goal Sunday events in Massachusetts. We served 975 pre-college students last year. 94% of the participants who completed the evaluation survey thought the information they received that day was worth the effort in coming. We are especially proud of our ability to serve the target populations, including low-income, first generation, minority and other underserved populations.

With the additional sites and growing interest we need even more volunteers. The sites report that they especially need volunteers with working knowledge of the FAFSA and financial aid. Please check out the website at www.masscollegegoalsunday.org and sign up to volunteer.

As a courtesy and not a requirement, during the months of December and January, NASFAA is offering FREE training for all College Goal Sunday and potential College Goal Sunday volunteers. Take advantage of this great opportunity to gain information about the 2008-09 FAFSA. Participation in a session requires that you have access to both the internet for the presentation portion and a phone line for the audio portion. Detailed registration information may be viewed here.

If you have any questions or concerns about this specific training please feel free to contact Johnavae Quinn by e-mail or phone at (202) 785-6979.

If you have any general questions about College Goal Sunday, please call Julie Shields-Rutyna, statewide volunteer coordinator at 857-488-9988 or email. However, be assured she’ll convince you to participate in this great event!
